Ruapehu district escaped major damage overnight on Monday, with the worst of the forecast weather failing to eventuate.

Ruapehu Civil Defence spent Labour Weekend monitoring the weather with staff in its Emergency Coordination Centre (EOS) on standby to activate if needed.

The local Civil Defence team was supported by the Manawatū-Whanganui Civil Defence Emergency Management Group in Palmerston North, which increased staffing at its EOS in response to the significant weather expected into Tuesday.

There were multiple watches and warnings across the region with heavy rain, strong wind, heavy snow and heavy swell warnings in place over the long weekend.

The Central North Island was under a heavy rain warning with thunderstorms possible.

Controller Clive Manley said on Tuesday there were no reports of flooding or major issues.

“We’re pleased to report only a few minor issues overnight, including some downed trees and small slips which were cleared promptly.”

Manley said the strong wind watch for southern Ruapehu had been lifted, and the heavy rain watch over the north expired at 4am.

He said civil defence teams and contractors were “very happy to have had a quiet night” and thanked those who remained on standby.

He urged motorists to take care on the roads.

“Our local roading network is still fragile from the recent weather events and repairs are ongoing.

“Anyone planning longer trips should check the NZTA Journey Planner before leaving, and for local road issues please call council on 07 895 8188.”
